Something Simple

Every once in a while it's nice to make something that doesn't take me days to create.  It kind of changes things up a bit.  So I broke out some of my shells and pearls and did some stringing with them.

This is what I came up with.  The name of it is the Coral Shell & Pearl Bracelet.  I also made some matching earrings.  The whole set will be off to Studio 12 Urban Day Spa in Modesto!

This is also to show everyone how I'm packaging my jewelry right now.  Since each piece I make is different, I make a custom card for each piece.  Bigger things like necklaces will come in boxes.  What do you think?  Any more packaging ideas out there?

So go out and look in the October/November issue of Beadwork, on page 10 & you'll see what I mean!!  You can say you saw it here first!!  :-)

Now it's time for me to do the dance of joy!!!

'Lions and Tigers' Beadwoven Tile Bracelet

A while ago I posted 10 Ways To Break A Creative Slump.  Since then I realized there's another great way to get inspired. . . .

Join some sort of a group that is into creative challenges!  For example, I'm part of a group called Etsy Beadweavers.  To be part of this group we have to enter one of their 12 creative challenges per year.  I hadn't been able to enter it yet, because of my own time constraints.  But the challenge for September is "Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!  - a throw-back to The Wizard of Oz!  This really got the ideas flowing!  Just the name is very indicative of the piece I chose to make.

I'm calling it "'Lions and Tigers' Beadwoven Tile Bracelet."

Can you see why I called it that?

Any guesses?
.

I decided to make a "fabric" square (or tile) of beaded tiger stripes, and then chose a swirly gold pattern to represent the lion.  Ironically the tile containing the swirls also could represent the "twister" that picked Dorothy up and took her to the land of Oz!  I love that it has a double-meaning!  The gold frames on each of the beaded tiles and the gold-tone metal connectors represent the yellow-brick road.  (Incidentally, the bracelet itself could represent the road, since it looks like a path of stepping stones leading you somewhere!)

If you look closely you will notice the faceted red crystals that connect the "tiles" of beaded fabric mimic the  color of Dorothy's ruby slippers.  Finally, I chose to use two tiny, box clasps in the shape of bows to finish it, just like the bows on her iconic, sparkly ruby slippers.

So this will be my first submission to an Etsy Beadweaver's Challenge!!!  This will be fun!!  So don't forget to take a look at the Etsy Beadweavers blog!  It shows all the entries, and from September 9 -15, you can put your two cents in, and let them know which piece is your favorite!!

Spray of Leaves Necklace

It's been a while since I've posted - sorry to have taken so long.  Summer is such a busy time!!  (But I have to say something about teals and aqua blues just say summer time over and over again.)

I went to my friend's day spa and she mentioned that she likes greens and blues, and it got me thinking. . . Yeah, green is so natural and earthy and blue is so cool and soothing!  So right away I bought some big blue (more like teal) circular shells and started digging through my stash!  I came upon these great Czech beads I had bought for another project that I had long ago given up on.  (They weren't uniform enough in size for what I was working on at that time.)  For this project, they were perfect!

Paired with the copper spacers and clasp, I think the metallic green and blue of these leaves look fancy, but yet still organic.  I worked the leaves randomly in different sizes and then arranged them much like a florist would the greenery in a bouquet.  When I found what I thought was the perfect "arrangement" I stitched them together and added touches of pearls to mimic a milky little raindrop nestled in among them.  (I must give the credit for the leaf technique to the book by Diane Fitzgerald, The Beaded Garden.  If you like flowers, and you like to bead, you'll love this book!)

So this is what I ended up with - the Spray of Leaves Necklace!!

As a thank you for the inspiration she gave me, this necklace and the matching bracelet & earrings will be available at my friends shop, Studio 12 Urban Day Spa!! SOLD

P.S. - My monitor is on the fritz right now, so I can't tell which picture is the best (which is why I added so many).  I would love feedback on which picture everyone prefers!

Bubbly Blue Beadwork Adventure Necklace

Who doesn't love electric blue?  Even better when it's electric, capri blue!

But I digress - This one began with a little adventure!  You see, at the last minute, my boss asked me to take a little road trip (only about 2 hours away) to do an errand for the office.  (Which, if you know me, is an adventure in itself because I am a little directionally challenged.  Thank goodness for G.P.S!)  Well, when I found myself in Sacramento, and at lunch-time to boot, I could not help myself!  I had to visit this awesome bead shop, U Bead It!!!  I've only been able to go there a few times, but it is definitely BEAD PARADISE!  So I quickly gobbled up my lunch and spent the rest of my lunch hour excitedly and hurriedly doing some bead shopping!!! Yay!!!

I found these beautiful capri-blue, long Magatamas that I've been wanting to try for SOOO long!  You see, my local bead shops don't carry these, so I thought I'd try just one little vial-full.  MISTAKE!!  I should have bought at least two or more - oh well!!!  And this is where the necklace escapade began . . .

I thought, okay, I will make some earrings.  I finished one and started on the other, but realized I didn't have enough Magatamas to finish the second earring!!!  That is the moment this became a necklace!!  I attached the second unfinished "earring" to the top of the first, added some crystal rondelles and bugle beads, and commenced the actual necklace portion using my favorite stitch, twisted herringbone (or Ndebele).

The difference between bead sizes in the herringbone rope and the tension used, created this great little zig-zag sway in the necklace!

To finish I used one of the ideas from the video I blogged about a while back: "Architecting A Clasp."  I hid a magnetic clasp in the back, so that you can create more of a twist or less of a twist simply by how much each side is rotated before the magnets are connected!!

I think the electric-capri-blue, the spiky Magatamas, and the waviness of the necklace as a whole capture the last-minute excitement of that quick trip to Sacramento!!  (Sometimes it really is fun when there's a hitch in the creative-road and you find a way to go around it and make something completely different from what you'd planned!!)

Have you ever started in one creative direction, and ended in another?  I'd love to hear your stories too!!!

10 Ways To Break A Creative Slump!!!

Do you ever feel like this?
So if any of you are like me, I have a wonderful, happy streak of creativeness where I even wake up in the middle of the night with ideas that just won't stop!!  I have so many that I can't even keep track of all of them, much less actually do anything with them.  Then comes the slump.  All of the sudden the ideas just don't trickle like they used to, or maybe I'm just not as excited about the ones I do have.  What is a person to do????

Here's some things that work for me:

1.  Take a walk - get your blood flowing (don't sit too long in front of your computer).  Get out of your work area!!!!  Sometimes those 4 walls that you work in just aren't doing it for you.  Go somewhere that inspires you.  For me, I love my local downtown area (I used to work there, and would take breaks by walking, looking at the beautiful tree-lined streets).  Or maybe a park!  Just take in the world around you - don't think of it as being constructive, just appreciate the beauty and let your mind wander to see where it takes you.  (I have to admit though, I do sometimes go to department stores just to see if there's an exciting new look that I may be able to incorporate into my jewelry.)

2.  Go to the local library or bookstore.  They have great art/craft-book sections that are just busting with great ideas that you may have never thought of before.  Maybe you don't even have to go to the section that's relevant to your art . . . sometimes nature, architecture, history, science, even fiction books may inspire a new piece of art.

3. Peruse the aisles of your favorite arts/crafts store.  Again, this is idea shopping - don't push yourself to feel like you have to buy anything.  Sure, go to your favorite sections, but if you have a little time, wander into the other areas that you usually don't visit!!  Sometimes something will strike a chord, and you have a new way to incorporate a usually unrelated item or technique into your art!!

4.  Clean up your work area.  I know, this one doesn't sound like much fun, but it does work.  First, if your area is cluttered, sometimes it's hard to imagine new and beautiful things when all you see is a mess.  (As my Mom would say - "Remember, a mess means stress".)  I probably need to do this one more often.

5.  Look through your supply stash.  Sometimes there are things in my stash that I didn't even remember I had until I look at them again.  Play a little with color combo's - maybe it will spark something.  Which leads to number six. . .

6.  When you find a winning combination (and if you can't create at that moment), put it in a little baggy, and put it into your Inspiration Box for later - maybe with a little sketch of your idea.  Later, look in the box for inspiration.

 7.  Just take a break (maybe even a little vacation day if you can): go to the gym, get together with friends (especially nice if you have some artsy/craftsy friends), or take a power nap.  Take care of your spiritual needs (Remember, "man cannot live on beads alone. . . I mean bread alone" ).  Sounds crazy, but a little healthy snack might just do the trick if you're feeling more of a physical slump.  (And don't underestimate the importance of staying hydrated!!)  Maybe you'll just feel better, refreshed, and ready to go after that.

8.  Keep a Folder of Ideas that you have when your "in the zone".  Sometimes this could even include new techniques that you hadn't had time to learn in the past (which also relates to point #10).  It doesn't have to be anything extensive, just things that will remind you of an idea you had.  I started doing this kind of by accident.  My husband gave me a great gift one year - a little folder and a copy of Beadwork Magazine.  From then on, I started casually adding other bead-related print-outs that I found on the internet, etc.  Before I even realized it, I had quite the collection!!  So if I can do it, it's really not that big of a deal.  Of course, remember to look through the folder when you need another creative jump-start - it really helps!

9.  Maybe even keep a file on your computer or phone of Pictures that you really like.  Looking at the composition, textures, patterns, or color schemes may help you to analyze your own work and re-energize it with more exciting color, etc.  (Or if you're just not that much of a computer person, add the pics to the folder mentioned in number eight!)

10.  Take a class to Learn a New Skill you can use in your art.  If you don't have a lot of time, there are a lot of art/craft magazines to which you can subscribe (see #8).  Youtube.com is a great place to see a technique demonstrated.  Or even peruse some art/craft-related blogs that are designed to help you be inspired!! :-)  (Of course this is a plug for my blog - you can follow it through Google or Networked Blogs.  I try to explain what inspired me to create each piece I make.  Also, if you look at the sidebar on my blog, I also have Beading Daily's blog feed!)  And if you couldn't tell, color is a big motivator for me - I follow MargieDeeb who sends out color inspirations especially for beaders through her "Margie's Muse" column.

So those are just a few things that help me.  Go ahead!! Try some and see if they work for you.  If you have any other ideas for breaking out of a creative slump - please share them with me.  I'd love to hear what helps to re-inspire you!!!
